The Contessa Luisa Vineyard was planted by Ferrante Capponi in 1959. He dedicated the estate, to which this vineyard was linked, to his mother Luisa Vonwiller. Today, it is the oldest vineyard still in production at Villa Calcinaia.
The plot is situated on a hill of about two hectares which, uniquely within the estate, faces west and therefore benefits from the warmth of the afternoon sun. The soil is characterized by a strong clayey nature and good depth.
Initially, as was customary, American vines were planted in hand-dug pits and only later grafted with the varieties present at the estate. The main variety is naturally Sangiovese, but alongside it lives a small community of other grape varieties, making the vineyard population more heterogeneous and lively.
